Year 7 Collaborative Painting – SUMMER TERM

Year 7 students are working on a collaborative piece that will implement the skills learnt during the postcard project.  The pupils have looked the work work of artist Sigmar Polke, the recent subject of a major retrospective at Tate Modern.  Inspired by Polke’s use of stories and narratives, in particular a work featuring characters from Alice and Wonderland, and by Polke’s varied approach to different materials, the result will be a large 9 part painting based on a film still from The Wizard of Oz.

Each week pupils will work on a different element of the painting, preparing and working on a different section to ensure consistency across the whole image.  The pupils will learn how to properly plan and execute an artwork, working in stages and considering each step.  They will also understand the collaborative process and begin to make decisions about the outcome of their work together.

Week One : PRIMING

Week Two : BASE

Week Three : DRAWING

Pupils firstly split each board into 20 equal small square sections which corresponded to lines drawn over a section of the original image. They then used these lines as a guide to draw up their section onto the board.  At the end each of the 9 pieces were put together to ensure that the lines flowed and matched fellow students work.

Week Four : INKS

Using garden cane and Indian Ink, pupils traced over their initial drawing to create a bold black outline.  Using a stick created different, unusual fluid marks.  The ink provided a permanent base layer that can be worked into with other media while keeping a clean image underneath.

Week Five : COLOUR BLOCKING

Students chose and created 5 key colours to use across the entire painting. The aim was to create a base layer which could be worked into with greater tone and texture in subsequent weeks.  Limiting the initial pallet meant that the artists had to be creative with which colours they used and where they were placed. More literal colours will be added in subsequent weeks but this foundation will enhance more descriptive painting and enhance depth across the work.

Week Six : DETAILS AND FINISHING

Wizzard

We completed the painting over several weeks, using a combination of media including oil pastel, wax crayon, Indian ink, watercolour and acrylic.  Pupils gradually built up the layers and redefined areas, creating depth and texture within the work.

The students worked very hard, focusing on the painting for a long period and the results are wonderful.

We look forward to its final installation at Pallingswick House in time for the new term!

Year 7 Postcards

In Y7 Art club we have been focusing on small scale individual works, experimenting with different techniques and media. These skills will be developed on a large scale collaborative piece that we will undertake during the summer term.
